21 Paintings Sold in 3 Months :)
I have been in a lot of group shows lately - ones that require multiple pieces, some of which were priced very low as per the criteria for the show. All of these paintings were 8" by 8" or under. Having gotten the caveat out of the way and doing the math, I realized yesterday that I have sold 21 paintings since late October! Of those 21, four were in galleries and were not done for the active group shows - two of which were large paintings. Profit margin-wise this is no great shakes, but regardless, it always feels great when people purchase my work and hang it on their walls to live with. Group shows keep me going. I am working towards several more right now, all around the theme of Valentine's Day. Working a theme can be very freeing within the constraints. It flexes my previously over-used McMenamin's/Stage Right/Commissions muscle. Years ago art paid my bills via mural painting, set painting etc. The wages were low and the work was back breaking but in retrospect I think of it as good training for versatility through attempting many types of expression and subject matter. Even though now I much prefer painting intuitively with rules that adhere to the visual logic that evolves as I paint, it is always exciting to know that I can discover new ways of working when I accept a limitation from outside.I am on a roll right now so I have to keep it going and set myself goals for working regardless of whether or not I have exhibits pending.

DeleteSome time ago I read online comments with references to content and form. I would add my two cents. The truth is that if I give a radish Matisse odalisque or painting a still life with magnolias, if Van Gogh painted some sunflowers or a chair, I would not care less, I care and dazzles is its form, its language, use of color, brushstroke, not content, who cares what paint?. I'm not saying the content is not important, but in my humble opinion, is far below the form. In any kind of artistic manifestation of very interesting and deep the story making it intelligible is the "write" the "calligraphy" if studded, scratches, irregularities. we will not have learned anything. Sure, if you're so self-centered and only want to look in a mirror and seen that no one else has access and it will feel fulfilled and happy, let him. How simple and beautiful is the hardest. Not just a typeface Helvetica Gothic primitive that, that can be applied to painting, heaviness and complexity or simplicity and clarity. If in addition the content is interesting is when you close the circle and something inside us quickens and vibrates in response to the issue, but it's the WAY that works its way into our hearts.
ReplyDeleteSo while sales and money is needed, have a limit, not so important.
That will never fill your heart.
I follow your paintings and I love them.
Best regards.
Jose Luis Coral.
Thank you Jose. I do agree that making the art is the most important thing. I don't rely on my art right now to make a living and for that I count myself very lucky. I am fortunate that my husband makes enough money as a Firefighter to support us financially and at the same time he is very supportive of my work and never pressures me to make money. Having said that there are several reasons why making money from sales helps to fuel my art. First, it gives me great joy that someone wants to exchange their own hard earned money for a piece of my art. Buying art work can be, in my opinion, the most personal and singularly unique purchase a person can make. Once a painting leaves me it belongs to someone else. I seldom know to what degree the artwork has significance for the buyer , but occasionally I hear from my collectors and what they say about my work and what it means to them supports me greatly. It really does inspire me to keep working. Not to say that without sales I would stop painting, but it fuels my fire to get positive attention for my work, and if that also comes along with money - even better. For one thing the money pays for my supplies and enables me to take on bigger projects. It will someday help me to travel which is one of the things I most desire to do but is not readily in my budget. Traveling helps open my mind and my heart and whatever the special ingredient is that I use to paint. Thank you so much for your support. It is much appreciated :)
